Quantify Environmental attended MeatEx 2022 in Toronto, Ontario on September 28 and 29, 2022.
The goal of MeatEx is to highlight the most important ways the meat, poultry, and seafood industries move into the future, with a particular focus on international trade. From high tech processing facilities to the latest packaging and food safety trends, as well as growing expectations of products quality, exhibitors showcase innovative solutions to the demands of the slaughterhouses, processing industries and the butchers/retail trade.
We spoke with the conference organizers, who see an incredible value proposition within Canada and its meat processing capabilities and international brand. Canada is a significant player in the world of meat production and, when compared to the United States, is a much more accessible venue especially for international travellers.
We were excited to be on a conference floor again to interact with people in person. The little but important things of sharing a coffee with a sales rep from an Italian company or shaking hands with an entrepreneur from France was again exciting and clearly necessary for building lasting relationships.
Although this was a smaller conference due in part to a general reluctance to congregate due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there was a benefit to this more intimate setting. We were able to have the undivided attention of company representatives, and hold detailed, important conversations. For example, an extended conversation with Benny Nys at the Landgeflügel booth hosted by the German trade commission was enlightening and clearly highlighted the value of international trade and Canadian-German trade.
Many industry representatives were present with booths and excited to engage with attendees including Ontario Beef’s John Baker who is keen to get the message out that Ontario Beef is focused on working collaboratively with producers and processors. Likewise, Jorge Correa, the VP of the Canadian Meat Council, gave an incredibly informative talk on the status of the Canadian animal protein industry with statics spanning nearly two decades. Survey results presented by the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity clearly showed that Canadians are most concerned about food safety, animal welfare, and climate change impacts related to the meat industry.
Many other connections were made for Quantify Environmental with important partner companies who have a focus on sustainability. We loved Global Drain Technologies’ Slot Drain Systems, as it reduces labour costs and significantly decrease sanitation water and chemicals and virtually eliminate hazardous splash back. An in-depth presentation with Veolia Water Technologies Canada, featured their industry-leading water treatment technologies that are quickly replacing conventional Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems.
